George Hill 1931- 2020 - A True Gentleman - Fondly Remembered
George Hill was a regular at Halon Menswear. On one occasion when we were being featured in the Shropshire Star in 2009, we asked George if he would be happy to do some modelling for us, so we had some suitable images for the article. George kindly said he would take part and gave a nice quote. It was an absolute pleasure to have known George as a customer and friend he was a perfect gentleman, especially when compared to some customers who come into our shop now who ask "Does anyone actually buy any of this stuff?"
About George & His Legacy in Shrewsbury
George Hill became proprietor of the fine quality furniture shop J H Jones in the early 1960s after working as manager for several years for the former owner. He bought the business which was situated at 51-52 Mardol in an historic property that lent itself perfectly to the prestigious brands that he stocked.
George became well known as a proud Salopian as he dedicated much time to the Shrewsbury & District Business Chamber as Chair and also to Shrewsbury in Bloom as President leading the town to victory in the Britain in Bloom title.
George‘s involvement with finely crafted furniture, all of which was made in the UK, gave him an understanding of woodcraft which led him to become a highly skilled woodturner. He made beautiful items for his home in Ridgebourne Road and also gave many to family and friends.
He had a strong sense of style and was always particular about the clothes that he chose, all from local menswear retailers including Halon. Even after retirement, George was easily recognised in Shrewsbury, as smartly dressed as ever.
His relationships, both personal and business, were of vital importance to him and he treated everyone with courtesy, kindness and respect. He chose his suppliers wisely and these qualities were reflected in their treatment of him.
Our sincere thanks to Elaine Nester - George Hills daughter - for this informative write-up and the use of the photographs.
