75 Years on the High Street in Shrewsbury
Halon was founded in 1905 in Manchester with more branches opening over the years. The Shrewsbury store opened as Halon on 14th July 1951 after buying the business from a Mr Geoffrey Newton Davies who purchased the business from a Mr Vickery in 1949. We know Vickery & Co were trading at 38 High Street in 1888 as recorded by the photographic history taken by Mr Della Porta at the time. Mr W Vickery bought the building 46 and 47 High Street in 1914. At that time the building was two shops with a pub trading at no 46 from at least 1780 until 1910 with a wine merchants at no 47. Mr Vickery combined the two shops, renting the shop out to an assurance company in 1915. Vickery & Co relocated from no 38 to 46/47 High Street in 1929.
When the Halon family bought the business in 1951 a young man namely John Brake had worked for Mr Davies for 6 weeks, he was kept on and
stayed with the business until his retirement in 2001. In 1964 he was joined by Jim Hughes who completed 40 years before retiring in 2004. On
a regular basis customers fondly mention both John and Jim. The current owner of Halon Menswear is Andrew Prow who started in 1986 at the
Manchester shop relocating to Shrewsbury in 2004 after the Manchester shop closed due to a 300% rent increase. In 2006, soon after the
business was 100 years old, William Halon the founder's grandson allowed Andrew to buy 49% of the business. William was about to fully retire
just as the pandemic started which delayed his retirement. Tragically William Halon died in July 2001 few days after he caught covid.
The business is still being run in the same way the Halon family trained their staff offering the very best customer service, good quality
products at keen prices and are very proud that nearly all members of staff stay with the shop until retirement. The Halon shop still is very
busy, currently there is an extension being built at the shop to give a larger stock room, there is a website to offer products via the modern
world and we look forward to the shop trading as a menswear shop for 100 years in 2029.
